Classic Formulas — FAQ

What are classic Chinese herbal formulas?

Classic formulas (jingfang) are herb combinations recorded in foundational texts such as the Treatise on Cold Damage, the Essentials of the Golden Cabinet and the Imperial Formularies, refined over many centuries. Each has a defined composition, actions and indications — Si Jun Zi Tang for qi, Si Wu Tang for blood, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan for Kidney-yin, and so on. They are the grammar of Chinese herbal medicine.

Can I take these formulas myself based on this page?

No. The doses shown are traditional reference amounts from the classical texts, not prescriptions. Chinese medicine works by pattern differentiation: the same complaint can call for different formulas in different people, and formulas are routinely modified. Always consult a licensed TCM practitioner before taking any herbs.

How do I search this reference?

Type a formula name (Chinese or pinyin, e.g. sijunzi), or a keyword from what it addresses (e.g. insomnia, fatigue, cold). You can also browse by category — tonifying, heat-clearing, spirit-calming and more.
