What is BaZi — the Four Pillars of Destiny?
BaZi (八字) is the classical Chinese system of destiny analysis, refined over a thousand years since the Tang dynasty. Your moment of birth is encoded into four pillars — year, month, day and hour — each consisting of one of ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches. The resulting eight characters reveal your elemental constitution: the balance of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water that shapes your character, talents, relationships and the rhythm of your luck cycles. Unlike Western astrology's star signs, BaZi is built on the solar-term calendar and the five-element theory at the heart of Taoist cosmology.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BaZi (Four Pillars) chart?
BaZi (八字, 'eight characters') maps your birth year, month, day and hour into four pillars, each made of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Together the eight characters describe your elemental makeup — the raw material of your personality, career inclinations, relationships and life cycles in Chinese astrology.
What is my Day Master?
The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar is your Day Master (日主) — the character that represents YOU in the chart. Everything else in BaZi analysis is read in relation to it: which elements support you, which drain you, and which luck cycles favor you.
Why does the calculator ask for my birth hour?
The hour pillar completes the chart and matters especially for questions about children, later life and inner temperament. If you don't know it, the calculator still produces an accurate three-pillar chart — select 'Unknown'.
How accurate is this free BaZi calculator?
It uses the traditional solar-term (Jie Qi) calendar for year and month boundaries — the same method professional BaZi masters use — accurate for birth dates from 1930 to today. Births within a day of a solar term boundary may need professional verification.
