The Five Methods of Character Reading
Splitting (Chai Zi) 拆字
Break the character into components and read the omen from each part. E.g. 好 splits into 'woman' + 'child' — signifying offspring and harmony.
Meaning 字义
Read the tendency of the matter directly from the character's literal and extended meanings.
Five Elements 五行
Fix the character's element and read its generating/controlling relationship to the question and the querent's chart.
Homophone 谐音
Associate by same or similar sound. E.g. 梨 (pear) sounds like 离 (parting) — inauspicious for love.
Adding / Joining 增减装接
Add or remove strokes, or attach a top or bottom, and read the new character formed. E.g. 一 can grow into 王 or 玉 — rising from the small to the prominent.

What is Chinese character reading (cezi)?
Cezi (测字, 'measuring characters') is a traditional Chinese art of divination in which you write a single character while holding a question in mind, and a reader interprets it — through its form, its components, its meaning, its Five-Element nature and homophones — to reflect on the matter. It is prized for turning the 'chance' of which character you chose into insight.
