Two mythical beasts dominate the wealth shelf of the Chinese world. Pixiu — the winged lion that devours treasure and, famously, has no way to let it out — and the Dragon Turtle, a dragon-headed tortoise that combines courage with unshakable stability. Both are kept, worn and given as prosperity guardians; both come with placement rules and small courtesies that their keepers take half-seriously and observe completely.
Pixiu: the beast that only takes in
Pixiu's legend is efficient: a celestial beast punished by the Jade Emperor so that treasure could enter its mouth but never leave its body. The defect became the job description — Pixiu is the patron creature of accumulation, beloved by traders, business owners and anyone whose money tends to exit as fast as it arrives. Tradition adds a second portfolio: Pixiu is fierce, and its ferocity wards off the hostile influences (including the year's Tai Sui) that follow money around. Keeping a Pixiu: placement and courtesies
The placement rule follows the legend: a Pixiu must face outward — toward the door or a window — because it hunts abroad and carries treasure home. Faced inward it can only devour what you already have. Keep it below eye level but not on the floor, never facing a mirror (the reflection confuses it), a bed, or the bathroom. Bracelet-wearers keep it on the left wrist (receiving side), head facing out toward the little finger. The courtesies: touch and handle your own Pixiu often — it bonds to its keeper — but don't let others fondle it; and dust it yourself, gently. Skeptics may smile; keepers reply that treating symbols of your goals carelessly is its own kind of omen.
The Dragon Turtle: success on a stable base
Where Pixiu is a hunter, the Dragon Turtle is a foundation. The composite beast — dragon's head on a tortoise's body, often standing on coins with a coin in its mouth and a baby turtle on its shell — merges the dragon's authority and success with the tortoise's longevity, patience and imperturbable stability. It is the wealth creature for the long game: careers, family fortunes, enterprises meant to outlast their founder. The baby on its shell adds a generational blessing — prosperity that transmits. Its temperament matches its symbolism: the Dragon Turtle doesn't hunt, it endures, and everything it holds stays held.
Placing the Dragon Turtle
The Dragon Turtle's classical post is behind you: on a shelf or cabinet at your back as you sit at your desk, playing the 'mountain' that Chinese siting theory wants behind every important seat. There it converts the tortoise's stability into backing — support from superiors, dependable allies, a career that doesn't wobble. Alternative posts: the wealth corner (facing into the room, consolidating), or near the entrance facing the door if the house needs a calm guardian rather than a fierce one. It coexists peacefully with Pixiu; keepers of both let the hunter face out and the foundation sit behind, which is a fair sketch of a sound financial strategy in any tradition.
