Front Door Feng Shui: The Mouth of Qi
Classical texts call the front door the 'mouth of qi' (气口) — the point where the house breathes in whatever the street is serving. Every school of feng shui, whatever else it disputes, agrees the entrance outranks every other feature of the home. The good news: it is also the easiest place to improve, and most of the improvements are visible to any guest as simple good keeping.
Why the entrance outranks everything
Feng shui models a house as a body: the front door is the mouth, and what the mouth takes in feeds every room downstream. A cramped, dark, obstructed entry starves the house regardless of how well the interior is arranged; a bright, generous one nourishes it. This is why practitioners assess the door before crossing it — its size relative to the facade, the light it receives, how freely it swings, what it faces. Diagnosis takes thirty seconds and, unlike most of feng shui, the entrance verdict rarely divides the schools.
Condition, color and the nameplate
The rules of condition are almost embarrassingly practical. The door must open fully — nothing stored behind it — because a door that opens halfway admits half the opportunity. Hinges shouldn't scream, paint shouldn't peel, the light above should work, and the path to the door should be clear and welcoming. Color follows the door's compass direction in the elemental cycle: red and warm tones flatter a south-facing door, blues and black a north one, whites and metallics west and northwest, greens and browns east and southeast. A clean nameplate or house number, easily read, is traditionally held to help fortune find its addressee.
What a door should not face
The entrance hazards are about what stands in the door's sightline. A straight road or long corridor aimed at the door fires 'rushing qi' at the house — the classic sha configuration. A neighbor's sharp roof corner or a knife-edge building facade pointed at the entrance cuts at it. Inside, a staircase descending straight to the door lets the house's qi (and, folk wisdom adds, its money) pour out; a back door in direct line with the front lets everything that enters leave without circulating. The apartment entrance toolkit
Apartment dwellers can't reroute roads, but the remedies were always symbolic interruptions rather than civil engineering. A healthy plant beside the door softens incoming rush; a good mat and a raised threshold mark the boundary between street and home; a bright, warm entry light — kept on at dusk — is the single highest-leverage upgrade in the toolkit. A screen or curtain inside breaks a door-to-back-door or door-to-staircase line. For genuine exterior sha — the road, the corner — a small convex bagua mirror above the door, aimed at the offender and never at a neighbor's entrance, is the traditional last word.

What is the best front door color?
