Fate is Fixed; Fortune is Not
'Ming' (fate) is your innate endowment — the baseline fixed at birth by your BaZi, family and era, like a hand of cards already dealt, hard to change. 'Yun' (fortune) is what unfolds after — the luck cycles, the environment, the choices of the moment, like how you play the hand: adjustable, actionable. The real value of a reading is not to seal your fate and leave you to give up, but to 'know your fate and use your fortune well': understand what hand you hold, then think clearly about how to play it.
Establishing Destiny: Liao-Fan's Four Lessons
In the Ming dynasty, Yuan Liao-Fan was told his whole fate by a diviner — rank, lifespan, childlessness — and watched each come true, sinking into fatalism. Then the Chan master Yun-Gu opened his eyes: 'Destiny is made by oneself; fortune is sought by oneself.' Ordinary people are bound by the numbers, but the numbers cannot hold one who is supremely good. Reforming his faults and accumulating good without pause, Liao-Fan broke through the fate calculated for him — passing the exams, having a son, extending his life. This is 'establishing destiny': the calculated numbers are only an ordinary person's default track, and moral conduct can move that track.
Five Ways to Improve Fortune
Fate (Ming) 命
Your innate baseline — fixed at birth by your BaZi, family and era. It comes first because it is the ground you stand on, yet it is the hardest to change. The wise know their fate without being imprisoned by it.
Fortune (Yun) 运
The luck cycles and years that unfold after birth — the ebb and flow you can read and ride. Advance in a favorable cycle, hold and consolidate in an adverse one. This is where knowing your chart pays off in real timing.
Feng Shui 风水
Adjusting the qi of where you live and work — courting the auspicious, avoiding sha, through form and energy. A tool that shapes the environment your fortune plays out in, within the bounds of the first two.
Hidden Virtue 积阴德
Cutting off wrongdoing and quietly accumulating good. This is the orthodox path proven by Liao-Fan — of all five, its power to move fate runs deepest, because it changes the person, not just the circumstance.

Can you actually change your destiny?
In the Chinese view, partly — and this is the important nuance. 'Ming' (your innate fate) is like a hand of cards already dealt, hard to change; 'yun' (your unfolding fortune) is how you play that hand, and it is very much in your hands. You cannot swap your cards, but skill, virtue and timing decide whether you win with them. The classic teaching is 'know your fate, and use your fortune well.'

The tradition itself teaches that forcing fate against its natural course 'bears a weight' (the law of cheng-fu): an advantage seized against heaven becomes a debt repaid later. Genuine change comes through cultivation — fortune, environment, virtue, learning. A blessing or ritual can support and focus that effort and offer real comfort, but anyone promising instant wealth or love from a single charm is selling certainty they do not have.
