BaZi Charting for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Casting Your Own Destiny Chart

**八字排盘是命理分析的第一步,也是进入八字命理世界的门槛。** BaZi charting (八字排盘/bāzì páipán) is the first step in destiny analysis and the threshold for entering the world of BaZi wisdom. Many find charting complex, but with the correct method and modern tools, anyone can quickly cast their own destiny chart. ## Section 1: Pre-Charting Preparation **Required Information** 1. Birth year, month, day, and hour (both solar and lunar calendars work; solar is preferred for verification) 2. Birth location (for determining true solar time) 3. Gender (male and female charts have different Da Yun directional flows) **Concept Clarification** BaZi analysis uses the lunar calendar (农历) system, but modern charting software automatically converts. The most important matter is accurate correspondence of birth year, month, day, and hour. The dividing line for the Day Pillar is the Zi hour (23:00)—times before 23:00 belong to the current day's Zi hour; times after 23:00 belong to the next day's Zi hour. ## Section 2: Casting the Four Pillars **Year Pillar (年柱)** The Year Pillar uses the Start of Spring (立春/lìchūn) as its boundary, not the first day of the lunar new year. For example, if the Start of Spring in 2024 is February 4th, then births before February 4th at 23:00 belong to the Gui Mǎo year, while births after that time belong to the Jiǎ Chén year. Year Pillar lookup is obtained from an almanac—for example, a birth on January 25th, 2020 (Spring Festival) has the Year Pillar Geng Zi (庚子年). **Month Pillar (月柱)** The Month Pillar uses solar terms (节气/jiéqì) as its boundaries. For example, the period from Start of Spring (立春) to Awakening of Insects (惊蛰) is the Yín month; from Awakening of Insects to Clear and Bright (清明) is the Mǎo month; from Clear and Bright to Start of Summer (立夏) is the Chén month, and so on. The month stem is not simply "1st month = Jiǎ month"; rather, it is based on the moment of solar term transition. Quick month-stem calculation: Year Stem Number × 2 + Month Number = Month Stem Sequence (subtract 10 if exceeding 10). For example, if the Year Stem is Jiǎ (1) and the month is the first month (1), then 1×2+1=3, corresponding to Bǐng, so the first month is Bǐng Yín (丙寅月). **Day Pillar (日柱)** The Day Pillar uses the Zi hour as its boundary; the daily cutoff is 23:00. The Day Pillar is most accurately looked up from an almanac, because the Day Pillar cycles every 60 days and requires cumulative calculation—not suitable for quick manual calculation. For example, January 1st, 2024 is Jiǎ Zǐ (甲子日); January 2nd is Yǐ Chǒu (乙丑日), and so on. **Hour Pillar (时柱)** The Hour Pillar divides the Zi hour (23:00) into early Zi (00:00-00:59) and late Zi (23:00-23:59). Hour stem calculation: Day Stem × 2 + Hour Number = Hour Stem Sequence (subtract 10 if exceeding 10). For example, if the Day Stem is Jiǎ (1) and the hour is Zi (23:00-01:00, corresponding to hour number 0), then 1×2+0=2, corresponding to Yǐ, so the Zi hour is Yǐ Zǐ (乙子时). ## Section 3: Casting Da Yun (Major Fortune Cycles) Da Yun represents the phased division of life fortune, extending from the chart's Month Pillar. **Forward and Reverse Principles (顺逆原则)** Yang males and Yin females extend forward; Yin males and Yang females extend in reverse.所谓阳男 (yang male) refers to those with a Yang Day Stem (Jiǎ, Bǐng, Wù, Gēng, Rén) who are male;所谓阴女 refers to those with a Yin Day Stem (Yǐ, Dīng, Jǐ, Xīn, Guǐ) who are female. The remaining cases follow by analogy. **Age of Onset (起运年龄)** Da Yun begins from the birth Month Pillar. For forward extenders, each month passed counts as one year; for reverse extenders, the same applies. The actual onset age = (Birth month count ± Da Yun month count) ÷ 12. ## Section 4: BaZi Strength and Weakness Analysis After casting the chart, the first step is to judge the strength and weakness of the Day Master (日主/rìzhǔ). **Judging Command Strength (得令判断)** When the Day Stem is the same as or generates the Month Command, it "gains command." For example, when a Jiǎ Wood Day Master is born in the Yín month (Mǎo month), the Month Command Yín/Mǎo Wood is of the same category as or generates Jiǎ Wood—at this time the Day Master gains command and is strong. **Judging Loss of Command (失令判断)** When the Day Stem is conquered by the Month Command, it "loses command." For example, when a Jiǎ Wood Day Master is born in the Shēn month, the Month Command Shēn Metal conquers Jiǎ Wood—at this time the Day Master loses command and is weak. **Judging Balance (中和判断)** When the Day Stem is neither clearly gaining nor losing command, comprehensive chart-wide judgment is required. If other stems and branches provide substantial support, the Day Master is strong; if not, weak. ## Section 5: Useful and Avoided Deities (用神喜忌) The Useful Deity (用神/yòngshén) is the Five Elements most needed by the Day Master—it is the core of BaZi analysis. **Definition of Useful Deity** The Useful Deity is the Five Elements most helpful to the Day Master, capable of balancing the chart, supporting the Day Master, and harmonizing cold/warmth and dryness/dampness. The Useful Deity must simultaneously satisfy two conditions: the chart genuinely needs it, and it can flow throughout the entire chart. **Definition of Supporting Deity (喜神)** The Supporting Deity (喜神/xǐshén) is the Five Elements that help the Useful Deity exert its power—it is the Useful Deity's assistant. **Definition of Avoided Deity (忌神)** The Avoided Deity (忌神/jìshén) is the Five Elements that conquer the Useful Deity and destroy the chart's balance. ## Section 6: Charting Demonstration **Case** A female born on August 17th, 1995 at 14:30 (solar calendar), location Shanghai. **Casting the Four Pillars** Year Pillar: Gui Hài (1995, after Start of Spring is Gui Hài year) Month Pillar: Jiǎ Shēn (August 7th is Start of Autumn; period between Start of Autumn and End of Heat is Shēn month; month stem Jiǎ) Day Pillar: Wù Wǔ (from almanac) Hour Pillar: Jǐ Wèi (14:30 is the Wèi hour; Jiǎ × 2 + hour number 7 = 15; 15-10=5, corresponding to Wù, so the Wèi hour is Wù Wèi) **Chart Analysis** The Day Master Wù Earth, born in the Shēn month metal Command—Earth generates Metal as draining—loses command. The Hour Pillar reveals Jǐ Earth Sibling Robbery to support the body, but the Shēn month is strongly Metal-Wood; Earth is weak. The Useful Deity is Fire (Seal/Print generates and supports the Day Master); the Avoided Deities are Metal and Water (they drain and conquer the Day Master). ## Section 7: Modern Charting Tool Recommendations Modern people need not calculate manually. Recommended tools: the Xìndálì Destiny Charting System (web version), the Qián Yuán Shè BaZi Charting (APP), and the Yuàn亨利贞网 Online Charting. Using these tools, one need only enter birth information to obtain a complete chart and Da Yun—ideal for beginners practicing analysis. ## Section 8: Learning Recommendations For beginners, three combinations are essential: first, combine with an almanac to verify each stem-branch's accuracy; second, combine with solar term knowledge to understand the principles of Month Command division; third, combine with real cases, conducting charting practice on familiar people. It is recommended to chart one to two cases daily, recording analyses, gradually building experience. ---
