The Five Elements (五行/wǔxíng) doctrine is the cornerstone of traditional Chinese philosophy. It holds that all phenomena in the universe are composed of five fundamental phases: **Wood (木/mù)**, **Fire (火/huǒ)**, **Earth (土/tǔ)**, **Metal (金/jīn)**, and **Water (水/shuǐ)**. This theoretical framework extends beyond destiny reading, permeating Chinese medicine, Feng Shui (风水/fēngshuǐ), health preservation, martial arts, music, and every layer of Chinese cultural life.
## Section 1: Fundamental Attributes of the Five Elements
**Wood (木)**
Direction: East; Season: Spring; Color: Green. Among the five zang organs, it belongs to the liver; among the six fu organs, to the gallbladder; among the five emotional states, to anger. Jiǎ Wood (甲木) possesses the essence of towering trees—straight and strong, resilient and upright; Yǐ Wood (乙木) is grass-and-vine Wood—flexible yet strong, skilled at adaptation. Jiǎ Wood people are tall with elongated faces, persistent in their endeavors; Yǐ Wood people are slender with rounded faces, adept at social interaction.
**Fire (火)**
Direction: South; Season: Summer; Color: Red. Among the zang organs, it belongs to the heart; among the fu organs, to the small intestine; among emotional states, to joy. Bǐng Fire (丙火) is sun-like Fire—bright and open, passionate and direct, strongly active; Dīng Fire (丁火) is lamp-and-candle Fire—subtle and warm, powerfully perceptive, skilled at contemplation. Bǐng Fire people have full faces with bright eyes, outgoing and forthright in personality; Dīng Fire people have refined features with deep eyes—reserved on the surface but passionate within.
**Earth (土)**
Direction: Center; Season: Late Summer (between summer and autumn); Color: Yellow. Among the zang organs, it belongs to the spleen; among the fu organs, to the stomach; among emotional states, to contemplation. Wù Earth (戊土) is fortress-wall Earth—solid and dependable, sincere and trustworthy, possessing leadership; Jǐ Earth (己土) is garden-soil Earth—meticulous and tolerant, skilled at harmony and mediation, tireless in service. Wù Earth people are sturdy with square faces, steady and trustworthy in character; Jǐ Earth people are rounded with full faces, warm and approachable.
**Metal (金)**
Direction: West; Season: Autumn; Color: White. Among the zang organs, it belongs to the lungs; among the fu organs, to the large intestine; among emotional states, to grief. Gēng Metal (庚金) is axe-and-sword Metal—unyielding and decisive, fiercely righteous, with great resolve; Xīn Metal (辛金) is pearl-and-jade Metal—refined and perceptive, articulate in expression, possessing aesthetic sense. Gēng Metal people have angular faces with bold brows and eyes—fierce and strong in character; Xīn Metal people have delicate features with nimble eyes—clever and adaptable.
**Water (水)**
Direction: North; Season: Winter; Color: Blue-Black. Among the zang organs, it belongs to the kidneys; among the fu organs, to the bladder; among emotional states, to fear. Rén Water (壬水) is river-and-stream Water—flowing and inclusive, profound in wisdom, strategic; Guǐ Water (癸水) is dew-and-rain Water—delicate and introspective, rich in imagination, artistic in temperament. Rén Water people have alert faces with nimble eyes—outspoken and self-determined; Guǐ Water people have gentle faces with reserved eyes—shy and introverted but highly sensitive.
## Section 2: Five Elements Mutual Generation and Conquest
**Generating Cycle (相生循环)**
Wood generates Fire: Wood provides fuel for Fire, as when wood burns to produce flame. Fire generates Earth: Fire leaves ash after burning, which becomes soil. Earth generates Metal: Earth contains metal ore within. Metal generates Water: Metal surfaces condense water droplets or melt into liquid form. Water generates Wood: Water moistens trees, enabling their growth. This cycle operates endlessly, representing the relationships of nourishment, assistance, and support.
**Conquest Cycle (相克循环)**
Wood conquers Earth: Tree roots break through soil. Earth conquers Water: Earth dams block water flow. Water conquers Fire: Water extinguishes Fire. Fire conquers Metal: Fire melts Metal. Metal conquers Wood: Axes and hatchets fell trees. This cycle imposes mutual restraint, representing the relationships of conquest, limitation, and balance.
## Section 3: Five Elements Strength, Weakness, and Destiny Charts
In BaZi destiny reading, judging Five Elements strength and weakness is the first step in chart analysis. When a Five Elements phase appears frequently in the chart and gains the Month Command, it is termed "strong" (旺/wàng); when it appears infrequently and loses the Month Command, it is "weak" (衰/shuāi). Excessive strength or weakness causes chart imbalance, requiring adjustment through other Five Elements phases.
**Strong-from-Affinity Pattern (从旺格局)**
When a Five Elements phase appears four or more times among Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and is supported by the Month Command, it is termed Strong-from-Affinity. At this time, that Five Elements phase's energy is overwhelming, and other phases cannot easily control it. It welcomes being nourished and assisted, and dislikes being conquered or drained. For example, in a Wood-strong configuration, encountering Metal is undesirable as Metal would fell Wood.
**Weak-from-Affinity Pattern (从弱格局)**
When a Five Elements phase appears very infrequently among Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the Month Command conquers it leaving it powerless, it is termed Weak-from-Affinity. At this time, that Five Elements phase's energy is exhausted and difficult to support. It welcomes being nourished and assisted, and dislikes further conquest or drainage. For example, in a Fire-weak configuration, encountering Water again is undesirable as Water would further conquer Fire.
## Section 4: Five Elements Harmonic Adjustment and Mediation
**Harmonic Adjustment (调候)**
Certain special destiny charts require special Five Elements phases for "harmonic adjustment." For example, those born in winter suffer from cold Water and frozen Earth and require Bǐng Fire and Dīng Fire for warmth; those born in summer suffer from scorching Fire and dryness and require Rén Water and Guǐ Water for moisture. Harmonic adjustment deities (调候用神) serve as important supplementary elements within the chart.
**Mediation (通关)**
When two Five Elements phases in a chart are in mutual conquest, a third Five Elements phase is needed to "mediate." For example, when Wood conquers Earth in conflict, Metal can conquer Wood so that Wood no longer conquers Earth—Metal then becomes the mediating Useful Deity. The function of mediation is to resolve conflict and harmonize the chart.
## Section 5: Five Elements and Health Preservation
Traditional Chinese medicine establishes a complete health preservation system based on Five Elements theory: Wood corresponds to spring,适宜疏肝理气 (draining the liver and regulating Qi), consuming more green vegetables; Fire corresponds to summer, suitable for nourishing the heart and calming the spirit, consuming more red foods; Earth corresponds to late summer, suitable for strengthening the spleen and harmonizing the stomach, consuming more yellow grains; Metal corresponds to autumn, suitable for moistening the lungs and increasing Qi, consuming more white foods; Water corresponds to winter, suitable for tonifying the kidneys and storing essence, consuming more black foods. Understanding the Five Elements biases of one's own constitution and adjusting diet and daily habits accordingly constitutes the essence of traditional Chinese health preservation wisdom.
