What Is Liuyao?
Liuyao (Na Jia divination) is the most technical, structured branch of I Ching casting — it starts the same way, tossing coins, but builds on top of that an entire framework of stems-and-branches, family-role lines and Five-Element strength analysis. Casting 起卦
Three coins are tossed six times, and each toss's heads-tails pattern builds one line, bottom to top, forming the hexagram. Mechanically the same starting point as the simple I Ching casting most people know.
Mounting the Chart 装卦
The hexagram is sorted into one of the eight palace lineages, fixing which line is the 'Self' line and which is the 'Response' line, then each line is assigned a Heavenly Stem, Earthly Branch and a family role. This is where Liuyao branches decisively from simple hexagram reading.
Reading Day & Month 分析日月
The day and month of the casting (in stem-branch terms) become the 'ruling day' and 'ruling month' — an external timing context used to judge whether each line is currently strong or weak.
Finding the Representative Line 寻找用神
Depending on what's being asked, one line is chosen as the 'representative' (yong shen) standing in for the matter — wealth questions read the 'spouse-wealth' line, health questions read the 'offspring' line, and so on.
Reading Movement & Change 分析动变
Some lines 'move' (change from yin to yang or vice versa), transforming the hexagram. Reading which lines move, and how the resulting generating/controlling/clashing/harmonizing relationships affect the representative line, is the technical heart of the method.
Synthesizing the Verdict 综合判断
The Self/Response relationship, the representative line's strength, the movement's effect, and each line's family role are weighed together into a preliminary reading.
Timing the Outcome 应期推断
Finally, the hexagram's clash-harmony-punishment relationships are cross-referenced against the flow of days to estimate roughly when the matter will come to pass.
Liuyao vs. Simple Casting: Where They Diverge
Both methods start identically — six coin tosses build the hexagram. Simple casting stops there and reads the hexagram and moving-line texts directly. Liuyao branches off at the 'mounting' step: each line is assigned a Heavenly Stem, Earthly Branch and one of six family roles (parent, sibling, offspring, spouse-wealth, officer-ghost), each line's Five-Element strength is judged against the day and month of casting, and finally one line is chosen as the 'representative' for the specific question, with the verdict turning on that line's generating and controlling relationships. In short: simple casting reads the hexagram's text; Liuyao calculates the lines' numbers.

What is the difference between Liuyao and regular I Ching casting?
Both start the same way — tossing coins to build a hexagram. Regular I Ching casting then reads the hexagram and moving-line texts directly. Liuyao (also called Na Jia divination) goes several steps further: it assigns each line a Heavenly Stem, Earthly Branch and family role, weighs each line's Five-Element strength against the day and month of casting, and picks one line as the 'representative' for the specific question — a far more technical, structured method of interpretation.
What does 'yong shen' (representative line) mean?
The representative line is whichever line, by its family role, stands in for the specific matter being asked about — wealth questions read the 'spouse-wealth' line, career and trouble read the 'officer-ghost' line, health and children read the 'offspring' line, and so on. The entire reading pivots on how strong or weak this one line is, and what helps or harms it.
Is Liuyao harder to learn than basic I Ching?
Yes, considerably. Basic hexagram casting can be picked up by reading the 64 hexagram texts. Liuyao requires understanding the Five Elements' generating and controlling cycle, the eight-palace system, stem-branch strength calculation, and how moving lines transform relationships — it's a specialist skill traditionally passed down over years, not something learned from one article.
